This week’s Garden Moments is dedicated to all those lovely Peonies currently blooming profusely in so many gardens, and to all those gardeners that give them life.
I don’t know why it took me so long to finally plant these wonder flowers in my yard. But I’m so happy that I did. I started adding them to the garden mix a couple of years ago and I have been adding them ever since.
This year’s gift is extra special.
It was in my mother in laws garden.
Mary loved her garden and her Peonies, and I was the fortunate recipient of several of her lovely bouquets over the years.
Two years ago, Mary’s health began to decline, which meant we had to make the tough decision, but also the right one, to move her into what was truly a lovely retirement home. It wasn’t the same. Mary loved her garden and leaving her home and colorful posies behind was tough for her.
While Mary adjusted to her new life chapter with grace and the love and presence of family, her garden and her precious Peonies never quite left her heart. She was thrilled when my husband and I offered to transplant a couple of her healthy bushes to our garden to continue the tradition of family floral beauty.
I’m so glad we did. It was a last act of true kindness that resonated with her. Us, too.
Mary died last year at age 98. But her Peonies live on.
This year’s first bouquet has proved an extra special gift, exploding with stunning deep-red blooms. Magical. Life goes on in this absolutely beautiful and amazing burst of nature.
When I look at Mary’s Peonies, I hear her gentle, loving voice, too.
Judging by the size of this first transplanted floral bounty, Mary still has lots to say.
Thank you, Mary, for the priceless gift of your Peonies, and so much more.
