It has been a while since I posted on this Wanderlust blog.
But this is the post worth coming back with.
It has been a bucket dream of mine for a long time to spend Thanksgiving in NYC, and hubby and I finally made it happen this year.
Our initial focus was to see the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!
Which presented its own special weather challenge on the holiday itself.
But first, hubby and I spent seven wonderful days in Midtown in a historic and beautiful hotel close to favorite restaurants, shops and activities. Perfect location.
The weather was incredible every day, except one.
Thanksgiving.
That’s when the parade was hit with heavy rain and wind, and everyone struggled with needed umbrellas that made it almost impossible to get a good parade view.
I managed to get a few shots because the balloons were up higher. But nada regarding the bands and any other on-the-ground stuff.
Fortunately, we had gone to the event the night before where you can take photos as the balloons are inflated. That was cool and a real family crowd please.
I got lots of great shots because the weather was perfect. Not sharing balloon shots here, in part, because I’m still editing them.
But getting there to shoot them was a whole different level of challenging.
We stood in line unexpectedly for close to two hours to get through security. I can’t imagine what that wait and endless hike was like for families with small children, the elderly, and anyone with mobility issues.
There was no advance warning of how challenging this trek would be, just the promise of some early parade-balloon magic, including Spiderman.
I’m glad we stuck it out. But I’m not sure I’d do it again.
If you are going to do this adventure in the future, prepare well.
Rainy day disappointment aside, we had an amazing Thanksgiving-week & NYC blast. I won’t share all the details and many photos here, but we’d definitely do it again.
Hopefully, with no rain next time.
I love New York!
